Is there any link between homocysteine and atherosclerosis?

چکیده
I have read with interest the paper by Han, et al. reporting that homocysteine (Hcy) is an independent risk factor for non-culprit coronary lesions progression after 12 months of follow-up in elderly patients who has undergone percutaneous coronary stenting. Hcy-mediated increased lipid peroxidation and generation of free radicals results in inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, which triggers atherosclerotic process. Coronary artery disease is also associated with higher levels of Hcy. Hcy is formed in the body from methionin. Methionin is metabolised via re-methylation and transsulphuration. These processes depend on vitamins B12, B6 and folic acid. The major determinants of plasma homocysteine level are B vitamins and folate intake and genetic factors. Plasma Hcy levels are negatively correlated with vitamin B12, folic acid and creatinine levels. Thus, reporting of these parameters in elderly population would be appropriate in this particular study. Conventional coronary angiography only demonstrates plaque that encroaches on the lumen. Due to shortcomings of conventional coronary angiography, intravascular imaging provides additional anatomic information regarding vessel wall changes in atherosclerosis. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) allows the direct visualization of the arterial wall and atherosclerosis. IVUS would be useful in terms of evaluating the progression of atherosclerotic process more accurately.

Comparison of Homocysteine and C-reactive protein Levels Between Active and Inactive Veterans
Background: homocysteine and highly sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP) are two novel cardiovascular risk factors that induce atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction through inflammatory mechanisms. The aim of this study was to comparison of levels of these variables among athlete and nonathlete veterans. Methods: in this cross-sectional study two groups of athletes (N=8) and nonathlete (N=8) ...

Background and purpose: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death in people with diabetes. These diseases occur earlier in diabetics than non-diabetics. Increased plasma homocysteine levels are among the factors that accelerate atherosclerosis in diabetic patients. Plasma homocysteine levels increase significantly in patients with atherosclerosis. Therefore, in this study, homocys...
متن کاملEffect of aerobic moderate exercise intensity on plasma and aorta homocysteine and 15-F21-isoprostane concentrations in high cholesterol diet-induced atherosclerosis.
Few studies have investigated the effect of exercise on homocysteine and 15-F21-isoprostane in animal models. The present study was designed to examine the effect of long-term exercise and/ or high cholesterol diet on MDA, 15-F21-isoprostane and total homocysteine in the aorta and plasma of rabbits. Methods: 56 male rabbits were divided into four groups: normal diet (control), normal diet wi...
